My mother is the manager of the kitchens at the school where these images were taken so I was lucky enough to have free reign to take whatever photos I would like. I wanted to document the move that was happening within the school as they had a new school built and have become a teaching academy, so they were moving from their old kitchen into a brand new state of the art kitchen. I really enjoyed this as I feel photo documentary is my strong point it was a really good subject to photograph.

I didn’t really have any issues during the shoot, I spent two full days a week apart taking the photos the first ones were of them packing up the old kitchen and the second was the day they were allowed onsite into the new kitchen. I have chosen the photos that I feel really compliment the story and give the best narrative as well although there are 83 I feel I would be able to make this series into a book.

It is an on going project that I will go back to, now they are up and running and fully functional, I will have to take a copy of my crb certificate as a precaution and discuss with the head of the school if it is ok for me to photograph now the kids are in the school.

Portfolio Review – By Don Maclellan

I was really lucky to have the opportunity to have my portfolio crituqued by a brilliant editorial photographer Don Maclellan

http://bygoshphoto.photoshelter.com

I was really happy with what was said in my review – i was also quite shocked!!

I have put in a snippet on youtube of what was said to me during the review and linked in the pages he was looking at from that series of work. (Sorry for the quality i am not good with video/audio stuff!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czb68bvber0

It has given me a new outlook on what i may do for my FMP ill be sticking with the same idea but maybe a different take on it.

As documentary/photojournalism is my speciality i am definitely going to take a chance and forward my images onto some places to see if i can get my work published for the first time.

Suggestions of where to send my series would be fab!

Thanks!

Due to my local free paper being delivered, I knew about the remembrance day service and march at the memorial park, so I decided a few days before to take photos of the park where I found that every tree I passed had a crocheted poppy tied to it, the women’s institute had crocheted and placed them around every tree.

On the Sunday I was up early to make sure everything was ready i made my way there for around 10 AM so I was ready for the service, I had planned this for my press photography shoot. I also knew it was going to be busy so I couldn’t take too much equipment although I did manage to squeeze to the front for a prime viewing spot. I had previously checked the weather on my iPhone and had kept an eye on it until Sunday morning, the weather was perfect for my images the sun was a bit low in some images but I like the effective gave. I feel that that the final images that I have chosen are my strongest and reflect a story within them.

FMP IDEAS

Ideas for FMP – the ideas in bold are my 3 main ideas, id love some feedback or ideas on techniques or equipment or locations i could use.

  • Police – cell shoot – long exp person sitting in cell
  • Homeless/elderly people – town long exp (see titerenko images)
  • Empty shops series
  • Army/Soldier injuries – Bryan adams reference
  • Derelict series

This is my mood board of ideas that really grab me. And feed my ideas.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 13.06.34

After a discussion with my colleagues about ideas and elaborating on things i feel i will focus on my second idea of a long exposure social documentary series on the homeless, maybe looking at focusing on ex soldiers or the elderly that were involved in war in some way. The long exposures of my images would highlight the fact of these people that have done great things and risked so much yet only to be just another everyday person in society sometimes just being left to deal with their demons them selves and having no support, i will elaborate on the ethical issues within my work.

I hope these images will pull heart strings and people can relate to them in their own ways even personally.

My Critical Study Introduction

For this assignment I have to write a 3000 word essay/critical study, this post explains what my subject is that I have chosen to talk about.

Subject/Question – Whatever happened to the photo essay/story?

The points I will discuss will hopefully come together to draw up a conclusion as to how the photography stories have disappeared and why its happened, I think these bullet points will be good starting points to begin with. I will also discuss the impact that social media has had on this, and why the digital age has taken over, and how it has changed our way of thinking. During this study i will include my own work and why i base my work more to this subject.

  • Storytelling
  • Subject matter
  • Images only
  • Images with captions
  • Images with full text
  • Composition
  • Debate
  • Punctum/studium of images
  • Technology – added to decline

Photographers to look at –

  • Darcy Padilla
  • Marcus Bleasdale
  • Altaf Quadri
  • Eugene Richards
  • Martin Roemers
  • Alfonso Moral
  • Andy Spyra
  • Bevis Fusha
  • Steve McCurry
  • Don McCullin
  • Tom Stoddart
  • Eugene Smith

There are more photographers that I will research and add into my blog but here are a few I am going to cover within my research.

ALAF

Altaf Qadri – The Lonely Mother – This story is about enforced disappearence, which is one of the most harrowing consequences of the armed conflict in Kashmir. This photo story follows a Kashmiri woman called Mughil. Her only son who was a teacher by profession, Nazir Ahmad Teli, left for school in 1991 and she never saw him again.

MARCUS

Marcus Bleasdale – Dijbouti – This is about how children are suffering for food and households are struggling in Dijbouti city.

DARCY

Darcy Padilla – The Julie project A photo documentary of an AIDS patient she documented her life in 1993 – to when she ended her life.

Some of the books i will use for reference for my research

  • Susan Sontag – On Photography
  • Roland Barthes – Camera Lucida
  • Photography The Key Concepts – David Bates

I will be visiting the Conflict Time Photography exhibition on the 6th March – this will form part of my primary research.
